ERE's OlioSep™ line of oil/water separators (also called oil interceptors) is made in Canada and removes oil and hydrocarbons from wastewater before discharge. It includes surface-mount units from 0.5 to 30 GPM, a 50 GPM low-profile separator, flush-mount plastic units for underground installation, DNAPL three-phase systems, grease interceptors and compact OlioSep-Mini™ systems for oil or coolant.

The right unit depends on your flow rate, the oil and solids you need to remove, and whether it goes above or below ground. Send us your flow rate, application and discharge requirement and we will recommend a unit with a sizing quote. Many facilities need one to meet municipal sewer-use bylaws; our guide covers the rules and the designs.

Oil/water separator FAQ

What size oil/water separator do I need?

Size the separator to your peak flow in GPM, not your average flow, and allow for wash water and detergents. OlioSep units run from 0.5 to 50 GPM. Send us your flow rate and application and we will return a sizing quote, or read our guide to sizing an oil/water separator tank.

Do I need a coalescing plate separator or a simple gravity tank?

Gravity separation works for free-floating oil but is limited with emulsified oil and very small droplets. Coalescing plate units capture smaller droplets in a smaller footprint, which matters where detergents or pressure washing emulsify the oil. Our complete guide to oil/water separators compares the designs.

Will an oil/water separator meet my discharge limit?

Your municipal sewer-use bylaw or permit sets the limit, and it varies by municipality; many Canadian bylaws set oil and grease at about 15 mg/L, so check yours. Performance also depends on the oil, the droplet size, detergents and maintenance. For example, the ERE DNAPL three-phase separator is specified at under 10 mg/L oil (droplets above 30 microns). Tell us your location and discharge requirement and we will help match a unit.

Should I choose a surface-mount or an underground separator?

Surface-mount OlioSep units (0.5 to 30 GPM) sit above the floor and connect to your drain line. Flush-mount plastic units are designed for underground installation, which adds excavation and slab work. See our guide to above-ground vs underground separators.

What if the water carries grease, coolant or dissolved hydrocarbons?

Different problems need different units. OlioSep Grease Interceptors are watertight containers designed for underground installation to separate grease and fats from wastewater. OlioSep-Mini systems handle oil, water and coolant separation. The RECOVER ALL system (up to 5 GPM, cartridges sold separately) separates oil from water and treats dissolved hydrocarbons and surfactants. Tell us what is in the water and we will recommend one.
